Description

Used: Paint Tool Sai.
Adrea Swil-Ova
Time taken: Five hours.

Bear with me, I don't normally do backgrounds. Ever. Hence my slight pride at this one. Pleased with her colouring, but not too sure about the anatomy around her chest, I feel it is a little lopsided.

Jesus, this thing has taken me so long to do. She's a character from a book I'm writing, Arathore. Her name is Adrea, and she is essentially a nomad in a land of races; her elemental race is that of nomadic earth, hence the habitation of the desert area, and her earthy colouring in her clothes and skin.
The sand mask is to protect her from sand storms in the desert; it is made of a film-like material that enables the wearer to be able to see through it, and so can be pulled to cover the whole face in more violent storms.
Adrea's part to play in the book centres around her unusual childhood friendship with the main character, a fire spirit going by the name of Eirian. In the world that the book is set, inter-racial friendships and relationships are rare, and Eirian breaks all of the rules concerning this by her best friend being not only of a different race, but also of a different lifestyle choice. Eirian's partner is also of a different race; that of a water spirit, particularly with strong affiliation with the waters of the rivers surrounding Eranivre, one of the main strongholds for a rebellion; a rebellion to bring together the races again to live alongside each other once more.
Adrea plays a minor but crucial part in this rebellion; to show that a nomad can change to being at least semi-stationary, as she wished to join the rebellion and her friends.

I'm sure there'll be more like this eventually.
Enjoy!

[I was going to upload the lineart, but I accidentally saved over the linearted version after I had merged the lineart and colouring. Curse my idiocy!]

I actually really like the background on this image. Especially the sandy background, I can totally see from the shading and highlights that it looks soft, therefore for me its really convincing. I think the one thing that stands out for me a bit is the the stars. I love the fading you have in the sky, but I think that the stars could use a little work. Varying the brush shape and size might help a little. I think the one thing that particularly struck me was how much the stars show through the clouds. Maybe they're think clouds, but I would think they would be a lot dimmer behind them.

Moving onto your character, I think you did a wonderful job on shading her. Her skin looks vibrant and alive and the creases and folds on her clothing all look natural to me. The one bit of shading that looks awkward to me is on her sword. On the handle there are two very dark areas, but they look out of place to me. But seriously, other than that you really nailed the coloring and shading.
